Why Watizit Works

Most people tend to use either verbal or mathematical skills to conceptualize, and we follow set patterns we're comfortable with.   Watizit uses ambiguous graphics to push to the user to conceptualize visually, which is not a mode most of us use (artists and art directors excepted).

Because the graphics are ambiguous, the brain isn't able to quickly identify patterns or "make sense" of the pictures.  But the brain is a pattern-recognizing machine; in TRYING to find patterns in the picture, it invents all kinds of possibilities.  These freely-arrived-at identifications can then be used as triggers to a technique called "forced relationships" which can be used to take you further outside your usual box.

Watizit takes you through the process of ambiguous visualization and forced relationships (see the exact steps at right) to arrive at new ideas you can apply to your particular needs.

Get Started!

The best way to understand Watizit is to try it out!   NOTE: Plan to spend at least 20 minutes, if not more, working with Watizit.  You can work faster, of course, but the full benefit comes from spending time to think and have FUN with each step.

What is Watizit?

Watizit (pronounced like "what is it") is the online version of an idea-generating technique used by Dave Dufour in live seminars, online brainlining, and other creative sessions around the country. It's fun, easy, productive and it's free!

Use Watizit to creatively generate ideas for coming up with new approaches to problems, products and other projects.  You'll be amazed at how many ideas you'll come up with.  At the end of the process, you'll be presented with a complete printer-friendly report of your work and ideas.

Watizit LIVE!

Dave Dufour can present a free-wheeling Watizit keynote or workshop for your group. Dave's presentations are a lot of fun, and use Watizit concepts plus several others to help you and your colleagues discover your creative potential.

Contact Dave right now for further information and scheduling. Dave also speaks on customer service and can even develop a customized "business theatre" show for your group.

Privacy

(Here is our privacy policy and explanation of what we will and won't do with your ideas, plus disclaimer and bla bla bla.)

NOTE:  WATIZIT is in 'beta test' stage.  It works the way it should, but we would really like you to send feedback to Dave Dufour about what you like, don't like, enhancements  you'd like to see, etc.  There's a link to the feedback page at the end of the process, or click here to send Dave a comment right now.

How Watizit works

These are the basic steps.

  1. Fill out the basic information about the problem or project for which you'd like to generate ideas (Just a project title and description of your problem or project.)

  2. You'll be presented with a randomly selected graphic, (like the one at right) to which you will answer the question "What is it?"  Try to generate as many answers as you can.  The pictures are purposely ambiguous so there are NO WRONG ANSWERS. This stage of the process takes you "outside the box," so you can approach your project in a new way.  (NOTE: This step is a lot of fun, and can be even more effective if you can do this with another person, or even a group.)

  3. After you've finished generating answers to "What Is It?" (we recommend at least 10), then you'll generate attributes to each of your answers.  For example, if you say the picture looks like an "elephant," attributes would be words like "big," "gray," "large-eared," "smelly," etc.

  4. Force-apply these attributes to your problem or project.  For example, how can you make "gray" apply to your problem?  Can you make your project gray, grayer, grayed out, etc?  Is there a gray area between two extremes that you can explore?

  5. The final step, after you've had fun generating ideas, is done by the web site.  A full report of your activity is generated for your further use, and we'll even e-mail it to you if you give us a valid e-mail address.
